FAMILY OF FOUR KILLED IN BIG TRUCK CRASH IN EDMONTON

A young Edmonton family of four has been killed in a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer near Barriere, north of Kamloops.

The family was in a Suzuki Grand Vitara travelling southbound on High-way 5 at around 8: 30 p.m. Wednesday when the SUV lost control on an icy curve and slid into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.

Killed were a 47-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, a seven-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. They were on their way to California, said police.

According to Edmonton media, the dad had just accepted a new job in California.

A cab driver who drove the truck driver to Kamloops after the collision said the driver was badly shaken and in shock over what had happened.

“He sees the car in front of him . . . just like eight feet away,” said the man, who did not want his name published. “It just came and turned [the curve] and slid right in front of his truck.”

The driver, who sustained minor injuries, tried to check on the passengers of the SUV. A woman was in the driver’s seat, he told the cabbie, and two children were in the back. All the passengers appeared to have died at the scene.

Police said road conditions were treacherous at the time of the collision.

“Road conditions at the time of the accident were icy and typical for this time of the year in this area,” said Staff-Sgt. Steve Frayne of Central Interior Traffic Services.

“It is a devastating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for the winter conditions.”

Police are not releasing the victims’ names pending notification of kin.

NY WOMAN SURVIVES CRASH WITH 2 BIG TRUCK 18 WHEELERS

February 2, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

EVANS, NY– A woman miraculously survived a horrific crash with two tractor trailers Wednesday afternoon on Route 20 between Eden Evans Center Road and Versailles Road.  Now one of the tractor trailer drivers has been ticketed.

The accident happened just before 4:20pm. Evans Police say a tractor trailer was stopped to make a left turn and the woman’s Chevy Cobalt was stopped behind it. Police say a second tractor trailer came up from behind, didn’t see the car, tried to swerve and hit the passenger side of the Cobalt. The car, in turn, slammed into the tractor trailer in front of it.

According to police that stretch of Rt. 20 has a speed limit posted at 55 mph and the tractor trailer was carrying a full load.

Police say her airbag is likely what saved her life- and good samaritans. “Passers-by, everybody stopped and helped her get out of the car. There was fuel leaking from the vehicle. They were afraid it was going to explode. They helped pull her out through the driver’s side window,” says Evans Police Lt. Tom George.

Police say she was talking at the scene and she was taken to ECMC in stable condition. Police ticketed the driver of the second tracter trailer with following too close and driving with a suspended NY license. He’s being held for arraignment.

HAROLD DURAND AND JOSEPH WINFORD DIE IN COLLISON WITH SEMI

A collision of two 18-wheelers early Tuesday morning killed both drivers and blocked the intersection of La. Highways 28 and 8 east of Leesville in Vernon Parish for about 11 hours.

Killed in the accident were Harold C. Durand, 54, of Pollock and Joseph J. Winford, 29, of DeRidder, State Police Troop E reported.

The accident occurred about 4:10 a.m. when Durand, who was driving a 2000 International west on La. 8, ran a stop sign and entered La. 28, where his vehicle collided with Winford’s 2007 Mack truck, police said.

The accident closed the highways to traffic in that area, and hazmat units from the Louisiana State Police and Fort Polk responded to scene of the accident.

One of the trucks was carrying molten sulfur, and the other was a log truck. A police news release didn’t specify which one was driven by Durand and which was driven by Winford. The molten sulfur didn’t spill onto the roadway, authorities said.

The highways were reopened to traffic around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said Durand was not wearing his seat belt. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, where he was pronounced dead.

Winford was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unknown if he was wearing his seat belt.

Routine toxicology tests are pending, and troopers are still investigating the accident.

Tuesday’s accident was the fourth fatal crash in the State Police Troop E area in January. Six people died in those accidents.
