Two people died early Tuesday when their pickup rear-ended an 18-wheeler at a rest stop in Schertz.

Schertz police Sgt. John Eisen said officers received a call about a reckless driver heading south on Interstate 35 about 3:24 a.m. Moments later, they got another call saying there had been a crash at a rest area.

When police arrived, both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Eisen said the fire apparently erupted after the pickup’s gas tank burst.

The fire destroyed the 18-wheeler’s trailer, exposing a load of textbooks. The heat also warped the trailer, causing it to cave in.

Police think the rig’s driver, who was unharmed, was about to leave the rest stop when the accident occurred.

The people who died haven’t been identified, but the pickup’s driver is believed to be male. Their bodies remained in the charred truck for hours while officials with the police and the state’s Department of Public Safety investigated.

“They’re burned pretty bad,” Eisen said.

The highway’s southbound access road was closed for hours after the crash. Eisen also said three minor crashes occurred when people slowed to look at the wreck.

The accident occurred when one of the cars pulled off to the right to let the 18-wheeler pass. The 18-wheeler clipped the car, causing it to collide with the schoolbus. The other car rear-ended the schoolbus, which flipped and caught fire.

A Halliburton crew helped rescue the passengers in all vehicles involved, they are being called heroes by the Texas state trooper who responded to the scene.

After the tornado struck, Knight said multiple injuries were reported, sending some victims to the hospital. No fatalities were reported, he said.

At least 300 structures were damaged, half of them severely, he said.

The city was declared a disaster area and its recreation center was converted into a shelter. Dallas County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of looting, and Sheriff Lupe Valdez toured the area, a spokeswoman said.

A curfew was imposed overnight and part of the city was blockaded, Knight said.

“The public’s safety is paramount,” he said.

About 30 miles northwest, a tornado tore through Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, causing significant damage to homes and businesses, including a nursing home. That city’s mayor signed a disaster declaration.

To the southwest in Burleson, Spinks Airport manager Aaron Barth also spotted a tornado approaching shortly before 1 p.m.

“The rotation was present there and slowly descended down, touched down for about 15 seconds one to two miles east,” he said.

As he watched, the twister veered away from the airport, causing no injuries or damage, Barth said.

Elsewhere, tornadoes tossed tractor-trailers, ripped the roofs off houses, churned walls into planks and strewed them across suburban streets.

Emergency responders were still trying to tally damages late Tuesday.

“I can’t give damage assessment numbers because the storm system is so broad based, it’s covering such a wide swath of the region,” said Maria Anita, a Dallas County spokeswoman.

At least 12,000 people were without power in Fort Worth after the tornadoes hit, a Tarrant County spokesman said.

American Airlines canceled nearly all departures from its hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Tuesday evening and diverted others to different airports, said Fort Worth-based American spokesman Tim Smith.

An airport spokesman, David Magana, told The Associated Press that hail damaged more than 110 planes. It wasn’t clear how many belonged to American, which along with American Eagle had pulled 101 planes out of service for hail-damage inspections. Magana did not return calls from the Los Angeles Times.

Two tractor-trailer drivers — a husband-and-wife team from Ridgeway — died in a fiery crash Tuesday in Texas.

Randy Stowe, 49, and his wife, Regina Stowe, 45, died after the truck they were in burst into flames, according to Sgt. Chris McGuairt of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, McGuairt said. Television station News 4 WOAI reported that the wreck happened at the intersection of Highway 85 and FM 1582 just outside Dilley, Texas. The Stowes lived on Wagon Trail Road in Ridgeway, according to death notices from Norris Funeral Services. Preliminary evidence at the scene indicated that Randy Stowe was driving the semi at the time of the crash, McGuairt said. When the incident began to unfold, McGuairt said, “one truck semi-trailer at the intersection was stopped at a stop sign facing west,” and a second “truck semi-trailer was stopped at a stop sign facing south.” The first truck — the truck headed west — “had the right of way and proceeded into the intersection,” McGuairt said. The truck facing south then “was struck from behind” by a third truck, which the Stowes were in, McGuairt said. Authorities do not know what prompted the Stowes’ vehicle to collide with the stopped truck, McGuairt said. He added that the driver allegedly “failed to control the speed.” On impact, the truck the Stowes were in “erupted into flames, and the occupants were not able to get out,” McGuairt said. Authorities contacted the owner of the vehicle the Stowes were in to determine who was inside, said McGuairt, who did not identify the owner. The crash started a chain reaction, and the semi that had been facing south was pushed forward into the intersection, where it collided with the tractor-trailer that had the right of way and was going through the intersection, McGuairt said. The speed of the Stowes’ tractor-trailer is not known, McGuairt said. The incident remains under investigation, he added. McGuairt said an advanced accident reconstruction team will try to re-create the incident to determine what happened, but it may be “days or weeks” before that process is complete. The drivers of the other trucks also were injured, McGuairt said. One has chest and back pain, and another has chest and rib pain, McGuairt said. He noted that both were in stable condition Wednesday. No charges were filed in connection with the incident, he said. The crash occurred less than 100 miles from Laredo, Texas, which was the Stowes’ destination, McGuairt said.

An 18-wheeler left the northbound lanes of Highway 59 between Moscow and Corrigan, striking a tree several yards from the road. A white Toyota sedan was damaged extensively on its front end. The car remained in the grassy median until it was towed away on the back of a wrecker.
